I'm a human electric blanket.

And by human, I mean mutant. If you got a problem with that, you can fuck right off.

I'm good just now. I mean, I might need one after you tell me how you ended up with a little brother dropped on your lap. But so far so good.

[It's possible that Jem came back to Eudio with a hangover. In fact, it's very, very likely. Still: she settles onto the couch (kicks her shoes off for maximum comfort) and curls up at his side.]

Spill.

Whichever's easiest, Alex. [Warning bells might be going off in her head, but she's unloaded enough of her own baggage onto people that having some dumped on her only seems fair.]

[It's ... well, she can't lie and say it's not a lot to take in. It is. She can't imagine what kind of pain someone must feel to find out they've got a family that's simply lived their lives without them. Or having to adjust to having them suddenly come into your life.

To find out that you're going to die. She's quiet, afterwards. Her hand moves reach over his lap, taking his and threading her fingers through his own. She squeezes and breathes out, and then, finally, quietly:]
Oh, Alex.

[There aren't any right words, she supposes. ]

[Alex really has been through the ringer. Jem, even with her bleeding heart and desire to simply make things better, cannot really comprehend how he must be feeling. Sure, she knows what it's like to be left behind. But, also, she followed. Not immediately, but she did, in the end. She doesn't know what it's like to know how she'll die, but she imagines she'd probably not cope well with it at all.

None of that stops her twisting and pulling Alex down for a very firm cuddle. ]
You're just gonna have to make sure you don't bloody die now. Simple as that. What's the point in making a whole new future if you don't try to live by forty?

[Of course he's going to try, though. He's got a brother to meet. A life to live, now. ] You're gonna get a happy ending now. I know it's a bit shit and miserable, knowing the if's and -- and all that. But it's just an if now, isn't it?

I think if you're worrying about every outcome it's just ... too much. You might not even go back to the same as him, you know? But he'll have saved you anyway. He won't be alone. And you -- you'll have all the stuff you wanted to sort out sorted and you'll have a little brother to look forward to seeing.

[A weak smile, and an arm wrapping around his middle. She squeezes. ] Sounds happy enough to me.

Wait till you start getting on each others nerves. Or he steals your stuff.

[See, Jem: stealer of stuff. ] I'm really happy for you Alex.

Nah, just had stuff to fix. Lot's of boring stuff. Definitely not as exciting as you getting the chance to terrorise a little brother later one.

I think I can handle him.

[Almost certainly, actually. ] Me and my big brother made sarcasm a sport, honestly. The only one either of us were any good at it.
